About

Housed in the Columbian College of Arts & Sciences, the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Program teaches academic writing and communication courses for international students from across the university. EAP also provides critical resources for students and other GW faculty, and collaborates with stakeholders across campus in support of international students.

Our faculty have decades of collective teaching experience in the field, both in the United States and abroad. They regularly present at conferences in the field, including several keynote addresses, and have published a number of scholarly articles and books.

EAP Program Learning Objectives

  • Understand the expectations of university-level academic writing and its key genres; respond to writing prompts with a rhetorical awareness that includes audience, purpose and appropriate language use
  • Identify and evaluate a variety of sources for writing and engage in the critical reading of authentic academic texts for the purposes of writing
  • Understand the principles of academic integrity and demonstrate the ability to integrate and cite sources ethically (for example, by directly quoting, paraphrasing, summarizing, synthesizing, and citing information from sources following the conventions of U.S. higher education)
  • Develop the ability to use both general and specialized academic vocabulary appropriate for the writing situation; increase repertoire of lexico-grammatical structures and transitional expressions that support clear and cohesive writing
  • Recognize the recursive nature of writing and actively engage in the process of planning, drafting, incorporating feedback, revising, editing, and formatting of written work

"After attending EAP classes, I realized how fun writing can be in a different language. ... I strongly believe it is very beneficial for international students to take EAP classes. Because not only do these courses prepare you for your academic writing, but they also teach and well prepare you for your future career."
